Sophora microphylla , (South Island) common name kōwhai, is a small leguminous tree with attractive fern-like foliage. Tangled juvenile stage leads to a stately adult tree. Flowers profusely from September-November. Nectar attractive to birds. Semi-deciduous. Hardy to cold and wind.
