Phormium tenax (called flax in New Zealand English; harakeke in Māori. A large common flax forming robust clumps of broad, green leaves. Great material for weaving and fibre. Tolerant of a wide range of sites including swampy and coastal. Excellent low shelter and erosion control. Seeds from January-March and nectar from December-January are very attractive to birds and bees. Evergreen. Very hardy
